  • To examine the findings of the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) annual report on areas of duplication, overlap, and fragmentation within federal government programs and other newly identified areas for cost savings.
  • On April 26, 2018, GAO will release its eighth annual duplication report. The report will provide an update on areas identified in previous reports dating back to 2011, include 13 new areas of duplication, and identify 10 cost savings or revenue enhancement areas. More specifically, this year’s report will highlight improper payments, tax fraud, and identity theft services.
  • Since 2011, GAO has identified more than 300 areas and 792 corrective actions to reduce duplication, but 41 percent of these actions remain open. GAO estimates addressed actions would result in approximately $178 billion in savings.
