Chaffetz Applauds House Passage of SCRUB Act

Bipartisan legislation helps eliminate outdated, burdensome, and unnecessary regulations

WASHINGTON – Today, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 998, the Searching for and Cutting Regulations that are Unnecessarily Burdensome (SCRUB) Act, sponsored by Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO).

“This legislation will help clean up the regulatory system which is in need of serious reform. For too long, layers of unnecessary and burdensome regulations have weighed down the system. I applaud Rep. Smith’s hard work on this bill and urge the Senate to quickly approve this legislation.”

Background:

The SCRUB Act, which passed through Committee in February 2017, establishes a commission to identify obsolete and unnecessarily burdensome regulations to be repealed. It also sets goals for the commission to reduce costs by 15 percent and to prioritize major rules that are more than 15 years old and rules that can be eliminated without diminishing effectiveness.

The Trump Administration shared support for H.R. 998 in saying, “The Administration appreciates the efforts of the Congress to rationalize the regulatory system and looks forward to continuing to work together to reform the regulatory process.”
