WASHINGTON—House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) today issued the following statement on the Democrats’ partisan report on prescription drug prices.
“Reducing the cost of prescription drugs for Americans should be a bipartisan endeavor, but Democrats continue to play politics by proposing a socialist healthcare regime that would do little to reduce drug prices and prevent life-saving therapies from being made available to the American people. Much like Obamacare, Democrats propose a heavy-handed government takeover of the pharmaceutical industry to artificially reduce drug costs. This would hinder innovation and prevent new treatments for diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, and the coronavirus from coming to the marketplace. Now, more than ever, we should be working together to make more life-saving therapies available, not less.
“The greatest healthcare innovations over the past century have happened in America, and they have happened not because of government mandates but as a result of the tireless work of individuals having the freedom to experiment and compete and improve all of our lives. Republicans and the Trump administration propose to build upon our healthcare system and champion a patient-first approach. President Trump has already taken a number of proactive steps to address high drug costs, speed generics to market, and reduce out-of-pocket costs, saving Americans tens of billions of dollars. Congressional Republicans have also proposed solutions to incentivize innovation and bring more products to the marketplace. We stand ready to work with Democrats on lowering prescription drug prices for Americans, but their continued attacks on scientists and push to make healthcare more bureaucratic is the wrong approach.”
