House Passes Oversight Committee Cybersecurity Reform

WASHINGTON, DC – On a vote of 416-0, the House of Representatives today passed H.R. 1163, the Federal Information Security Amendments Act of 2013, which updates the decade old the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

“As technology continues to evolve, so will the sophistication and frequency of cyber attacks. Now is the time to update and strengthen our national cyber defense,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., sponsor of the legislation and chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
“This bipartisan legislation will address the shortcomings of FISMA by incorporating recent technological innovations, and enhance and strengthen the current framework that protects federal information technology systems,” Issa continued.
H.R. 1163 establishes a mechanism for stronger oversight through a focus on automated and continuous monitoring of cybersecurity threats and the implementation of regular threat assessments.

The House of Representatives passed similar legislation in the 112th Congress (H.R. 4257) by a unanimous voice vote. The Senate did not act on the legislation.
