Issa: IRS ‘Mea Culpa’ Not an Honest One

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair Demands Accountability during Meet the Press Interview

WASHINGTON- Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press with David Gregory, Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., spoke about the Committee’s investigation into the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of certain tax-exempt organizations for their political beliefs.

“The bottom line is they used key words to go after conservatives. This is something where you have to institute changes to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Issa. “There has to be accountability for the people who did it. And, quite frankly, up until a few days ago, there’s got to be accountability for people who were telling lies about it being done.”

Issa also expressed concern with IRS’ decision to leak the as yet unfinished report.

“Before the IG’s report comes to the public or to Congress as required by law it’s leaked by the IRS to try and spin the output. This mea culpa is not an honest one,” Issa continued.

You can read a copy of the Committee’s request letter signed by Chairman Issa and Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, here and a copy of TIGTA’s response here.
