Issa Praises Spending Cuts, Oversight Committee Contributions in Bill Funding Government

WASHINGTON- Today the House of Representatives voted to approve H.R. 1473 by 260-167, funding the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year while cutting roughly $39 billion from this year’s spending. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement:

“The Federal government has a spending problem and while this funding resolution does not cut enough, it is a clear and positive change in direction from the last two years,” said Chairman Issa.  “I am particularly proud of the contributions made by the Oversight Committee that led to the reduction of wasteful National Archive grants as well as the successful effort to redirect existing funds to the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program.”

Key Oversight Committee Contributions to H.R. 1473:

National Archive Grants:

At June 9th, 2010  hearing, Oversight Republicans pressed for the elimination of certain wasteful grant programs at the National Archives even while Democrats were attempting to increase spending.  Committee Republicans also fought to expose problems with the Electronic Records Archive program, which was also cut by H.R. 1473, at a June 17th hearing.

D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program:

Oversight Republicans held a hearing on March 1st featuring parents and students testifying to the effect of the popular school choice program, terminated by the Obama administration in 2009. The committee marked up H.R. 471, a bill to reauthorize the program, on March 10th. H.R. 1473 fully includes H.R. 471, as approved by the committee, which revives the program restoring hope and educational opportunity to thousands of D.C. children.
