Issa Statement on BP Deepwater Horizon Report

WASHINGTON, DC – Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Darrell Issa released the following statement regarding a report released today by BP on the Deepwater Horizon tragedy:

“This report details a tragic chain of mistakes by companies, individuals, and government regulators who were trusted and paid to safely execute important work.  Had someone, in any of the multiple points on this chain of failure, done their job properly this disaster could have been mitigated or avoided entirely.  While the report is appropriately blunt, it outlines a degree of negligence by BP, its partners, and regulators that can only be called shameful.”

“The technology to prevent such a disaster clearly exists, but technology only works when implemented properly by professionals who understand and maintain it with vigilance.  The American people have a right to expect that industry and the federal government have the know-how and wherewithal to ensure safe offshore oil drilling operations.  People, particularly those whose lives have been directly affected by this disaster, should be angry about all that went wrong.”
