Oversight Committee Chairman Issa Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Affirming Worker Rights

(WASHINGTON)—Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) today released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling to affirm workers rights to object when unions notify workers of special assessments or fee increases.  In April, The Committee launched the website protectingourworkers.com to raise awareness about issues of worker rights and union political activity funded by workers without their consent.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling reaffirms the long-standing rights of public sector union workers.  While the SEIU fought aggressively to restrict workers’ rights, the Supreme Court recognized it was purely a political money-raising scheme.  Unions attempted to exploit that loophole to extract money from those who already expressed their disagreement with the use of their money for political activities.

“Workers should decide how their hard-earned money is spent and they should know how their dues are spent.  Today’s ruling is a victory for supporters of workers’ rights and the cause of workplace freedom.”
