Oversight Hearing to Examine Federal Waste

Experts from Nonpartisan Good Government Groups to Testify

WASHINGTON – House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing next Tuesday, February 5th as part of its continuing efforts to examine waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement in federal spending programs and its affect on the federal government’s current fiscal path.

According to a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the federal government had a $1.1 trillion deficit for the fiscal year 2012. In their report, the GAO stated that given the balance between spending and revenue “the current structure of the federal budget is unsustainable.” While there is no exact figure for the amount of money the federal government misspends annually, most experts agree that billions could be saved by ending improper payments, following recommendations from Inspector Generals, and eliminating structural duplication and overlap.

In this hearing, the Committee will hear testimony from non-governmental organizations about the issues within the federal government that are contributing to waste and inefficiency.
